Gear & Where to Find It

Skates

  • Quad skates only (no rollerblades/in-line skates)
    • Low ankle, low heel skates recommended (skate boot around/over the ankle = less range of movement.)
  • Wheel durometer (hardness) recommended use in our indoor space: 91A – 95A (on average, since individual preferences may vary.)

Helmet

  • Dual-Certification (bicycle & skateboard certified)
  • Triple 8 is a popular brand with Frostbites (these helmets are available at other retailers online or at sport and skate shops around the cities.)

Pads

  • Knee Pads, Elbow Pads, & Wrist Guards
    • Get thick, generously foam-lined knee pads that stay snug and don’t slide around on your arms and legs.
    • Popular brands: 187 Killer Pads and Triple 8 (available on Amazon or locally at Zumies around the cities.)

Mouth Guard

  • Mouthguards must fit comfortably and not pop out when talking–communication is key in derby so being able to talk with it in is important.
    • Boil & bite guards are an inexpensive option.
    • Talk to your dentist about a custom guard.
    • Sisu is a popular brand (Aero Guard & 3D Custom Fit) with Frostbite Players (also available online at other retailers.)
    • A case is recommended to keep your mouthguard safe.

Policies

Attendance

  • It is okay to miss practice, but please notify coaches if you will miss 2-3 practices in a row.
    • Travel Team skaters are expected to be present at at least 50% of practices to promote consistent learning, confident application of skills & strategy, and team cohesion.
  • Accompanying adults may leave and return for pick-up or are welcome to remain onsite to observe practice (or quietly socialize with other parents, work, read, etc.) Practices are not open to the public.
  • Timeliness: As practices are in a busy area of downtown St. Paul, be sure to allow extra time on days with other events to find parking and make it to practice early enough to be geared up for the start time.

Code of Conduct

  • JRDA Code of Conduct
  • In many cases, Frostbite leadership and/or MNRD HR may utilize the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL)’s bylaws as a guideline to handle conduct violations, even if some or all persons involved are younger than high school age.
  • Full information on the Minnesota Frostbite Participant Code of Conduct is available through the wiki on the Frostbite groups.io page. Contact frostbite@mnrollerderby.com for access to the necessary groups.io page & slack.

Communication

  • Official communication goes to registered families through Groups.io. If you are not receiving emails, please email frostbite@mnrollerderby.com for access.
  • Slack is also used for communications between coaches, parents, and skaters. Last minute location changes (or locked doors), carpooling, gear discussions, and other threads are available each session. Email frostbite@mnrollerderby.com for access.
